You’re building an AI agent. It needs to call APIs, make decisions, handle errors, and not hallucinate your production database into oblivion. Simple, right?

Wrong. Agentic AI development is littered with projects that looked promising on day one and became unmaintainable nightmares by week three. The difference between systems that work and systems that fail isn’t about model size or prompt engineering wizardry—it’s about following battle-tested patterns and avoiding common traps.

Agentic systems are fundamentally different from traditional software. They make autonomous decisions, handle ambiguity, and operate in environments you can’t fully control. This creates three core challenges:

Unpredictability. Traditional code follows deterministic paths. Agents don’t. You can’t unit test your way to reliability when the system’s behavior depends on LLM outputs that vary between runs.

Tool interaction complexity. Agents need to call external tools—databases, APIs, file systems. Each tool is a potential failure point. Each interaction requires error handling, validation, and safety checks that traditional software doesn’t need.

Evaluation difficulty. How do you know if your agent works? Success isn’t binary. An agent might complete a task technically but do it inefficiently, unsafely, or in ways that violate business logic. Standard testing frameworks weren’t built for this.

These challenges are real, but solvable. The key is recognizing that agentic systems need different architectural patterns than traditional software.
